My Favorite Garden Chores
Selective Pruning—There is a complex of townhomes near me where the landscapers come every few months to sculpt the Nandina and Mahonia into nice tidy gumdrops and I hate it. Shrubs can add so much texture and structure to a landscape, and although a completely unpruned shrub can sometimes overwhelm its neighbors, shearing them into gumdrops and boxes seems to be an overcorrection.
Don’t get me wrong, tidy shearing has its place. A well-maintained topiary or hedge can add a lovely pop of order to contrast an otherwise naturalistic garden. However, my preferred form of pruning is selective pruning, which can improve the health and appearance of a shrub while keeping it shrub-shaped. If that’s what you’re looking for, I can help. You can hire me to do the work, or to teach you how to do it yourself. If you’re feeling curious or ambitious, check out Plant Amnesty’s resources on the topic!
Rose Care—If I ever get around to making Shared Breath Plant Care merch, there will probably be a shirt or a mug or a hat that says “Roses are Resilient”. Despite the reputation for finicky-ness, roses are probably some of the hardiest garden plants there are. I spent my first year in horticulture in the Rose Garden at Point Defiance Park, where I got a hands-on crash course on rose pruning, feeding, overwintering and disease prevention. One of my first jobs when I started out on my own was to transplant a cherished rosebush from one backyard to another across town. My work with plants has always involved roses, and if you want someone who can care for yours not just with competence, but with affection, I’m here for you.
Seasonal Container Refreshes—Sometimes a garden can feel overwhelming, and choosing a shrub or a tree to put in the landscape can feel so permanent. Thank goodness for containers! A strategically placed pot on a porch or a patio provides a low-stakes opportunity to try out a new color combination or a new plant. I love the creative challenge of trying to match colors and textures while also considering sun exposure and the threat of deer! Recently, I’ve been messing around with the Proven Winners Container Garden Recipes for inspiration. I’m happy to choose plants for you or make it work with whatever you brought home from your latest garden center splurge!
Better pictures coming later this season!
